The skin is made up of cells which need to be nourished and pampered to keep it healthy. Having said that, cells do have a life span and they die.
Dead skin cells make the skin look dull and dry, so it is important to remove these cells so that the new and healthy skin cells can thrive to keep the skin glowing and radiant.
EXFOLIATION: This is the removal of the old and dead skin cells from the outer surface of the skin. It can be PHYSICAL or CHEMICAL. It helps reduce blemishes, uneven skin tone and wrinkles.
Physical exfoliation involves physically scrubbing off the dead skin cells with an exfoliant which is abrasive. There are many products that can be used to physically exfoliate the skin.
Examples of exfoliants included in products that physically exfoliate the skin are:
Sugars: fine,coarse,white,brown etc.
Ground grains and seeds: almond, adzuki beans, oats, rice, sesame etc.
Fruit powders and seeds: vanilla, raspberry, kiwi, grape seed etc.
Salts: Dead sea, Hawaiian Alaea, Himalayan salt etc.
Misc: Wax beads, sand, ground coconut and walnut shells, pumice, alumina etc.
Chemical exfoliation involves using a chemical exfoliant which is a chemical ingredient that removes the top layer of the skin. A common ingredient used are the Alpha Hydroxy Acids which remove dead skin cells to reveal glowing younger looking healthy skin. The are natural acids found in foods like citrus fruits, sugar cane and milk.
These can cause sensitivity to the sun, so it is very important to use a sunscreen to protect the skin. They can also cause irritation, so it is advisable to do a patch test before using them and do not use on sensitive skin
As you can see, there are so many natural exfoliants that can be included in products that exfoliate the skin.
In general for sensitive and tender skin areas like the face, very fine sugars, wax beads, alumina crystals, ground grains and fruit powders are used because these are gentle for the skin. For tougher areas like the body, hands and feet, coarse sugars, salts, seeds, shells, sand and pumice can be used.
It is important to note that no matter what product you use, it is important to exfoliate very gently.
How to exfoliate:
You must always follow the direction on the packaging. If you are using a physical exfoliant, massage a small amount of product unto the skin. Use gentle circular motions to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. Rinse off with warm water or clean off with a warm moist towel and then follow with a moisturizer. This typically should be done no more than once a week.
If you are using a product that contains Alpha Hydroxy acids, it is applied daily after cleansing and toning the skin. It is usually formulated as a cream, lotion or gel, and you do not rinse off. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen after.
